Special Session (Minutes)

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners convened a special session on July 9, 2024, to address the resignation of District #1 Commissioner Jamie Kramer and discuss the process for filling the vacancy. The meeting, held at the Government Center in Suttons Bay, Michigan, was called to order by Chairman Ty Wessell at 2:49 p.m. The board accepted Kramer’s resignation, effective immediately, with a motion moved by Commissioner Gwenne Allgaier and seconded by Commissioner James S. O’Rourke. The motion passed unanimously among the present commissioners, expressing appreciation for Kramer’s dedication and service to District #1 and Leelanau County.

Following the acceptance of Kramer’s resignation, the board discussed the process for appointing a new commissioner. Interim Administrator Richard I. Lewis informed the board that they had 30 days to make an appointment. Suggestions included advertising the position and reviewing applications from interested candidates. However, Commissioner Douglas Rexroat proposed a motion to let the voters decide rather than appointing a new commissioner, which was seconded by Commissioner Melinda C. Lautner. After some discussion and a vote, the motion passed with four votes in favor and two against, thus deciding to leave the position vacant until the next election.

Chairman Wessell announced that he would make recommendations for replacements on the boards, commissions, and committees previously served by Kramer at the next meeting. These include the Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA), Substance Abuse, and Senior Services Advisory Committee. Commissioners interested in these positions were encouraged to contact Wessell. The meeting concluded with public comments and commissioner remarks, expressing gratitude for Kramer’s service and acknowledging her contributions to the county. The session adjourned at 3:17 p.m.
