Leland Township Board (Minutes)

The Leland Township Board convened on February 12, 2024, at the Leland Township Library, with Supervisor Susan Och leading the meeting. The agenda was approved, and the consent agenda, which included minutes from previous meetings and the approval of the Fishtown 5K event, was passed despite Trustee Clint Mitchell’s suggestion to approve events separately. Public comments addressed issues such as speed limits, zoning ordinances, and the Sewer Commission’s quorum issues. Reports from various boards and commissions were reviewed, with notable updates from the Fire & Rescue, Harbor, Sewer, Parks & Rec, and County Commission. The Treasurer’s report indicated a healthy sewer fund balance, and the Supervisor’s report discussed the potential for a TAP Grant for sidewalk repairs and the significant cost of road improvements.

Several action items were addressed during the meeting. Discussions on sidewalk protests and potential TAP Grant funding for repairs were tabled for further budget discussions. The Leland Chamber of Commerce sought approval for street closings for the Wine Fest and discussed issues with the fireworks vendor for the upcoming July 3 event. The Board approved the use of Bartholomew Park for an event on July 21, 2024, and passed resolutions setting salaries for township officials effective April 1, 2024, with adjustments reflecting inflation and increased workload due to new voting laws. The Board also approved a poverty exemption resolution and designated Trustee Clint Mitchell to finalize a construction easement with the Coyles. Justin Acker was appointed to the Parks & Rec Committee, and the payment of bills from January 9 to February 12, 2024, was approved.

Public comments at the end of the meeting raised concerns about the sewer operations bidding process and the County’s handling of a Commissioner’s dismissal. The meeting concluded with the announcement of the next meeting date on March 11, 2024.
