Special Session:1/24/2024 (Minutes)

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners convened a special session on January 24, 2024, at the Government Center in Suttons Bay, Michigan. The meeting, called to order by Chairman Ty Wessell at 1:05 p.m., focused on several key agenda items. The session began with the approval of the agenda, which saw the removal of items #1 and #5. The primary discussions revolved around the approval of a contract with DCS Technologies for the Point Broadband Project and the authorization of continued efforts with Charter to establish a contract for the western four townships. Both motions were passed unanimously, with the DCS contract amounting to $96,000 and the Charter effort capped at $5,000 per month until a formal agreement is established.

Further, the board addressed a proclamation to acknowledge Dick Grout’s French Legion of Honor Award, which was approved unanimously. The resolution will be forwarded to State Representative Betsy Coffia for presentation. The session also considered a contract with legal counsel to represent Leelanau County in potential litigation regarding a dispute with Grand Traverse County over the BATA Inter-Local Agreement. This motion passed with a vote of 5-2, waiving the bid policy but with no immediate expenditures. The agenda item regarding a revised FOIA appeal was removed from discussion.

Public comments were received from Bill Wiesner and Kerry O’Non, both in person, with additional written comments available online. The meeting concluded with Commissioner Ross inquiring about the upcoming Governance meeting and Chairman Wessell reminding the board about the upcoming Administrator evaluations. The session adjourned at 2:03 p.m.
